印度卫生部周四表达了对用化学制剂人工催熟水果激增的担心，并需要各邦采取手段，制止滥用催熟剂的危险行为。

文中的chemical ripening就是指催熟，也就是artificial ripening by using chemicals，也可以称为forced ripening。进行催熟的化学制剂就是ripener／ripening agent（催熟剂）。和ripener类似，之前发生的西瓜爆炸是由于用了swelling agent（膨大剂），agent在这里指的就是化学制剂。

Ripe在这里表示瓜果的成熟，夏季买西瓜，有时买到的只不过half-ripe（半生不熟），一点儿都不甜。Ripe还可以用来指抽象的成熟，譬如The time is not yet ripe.（机会尚未成熟。）但ripe old age则指的是高龄、晚年。
